If you don’t feel like hiking

Medvednica is within everyone’s reach – even without hiking boots! If you’re not in the mood for walking today, you can still reach the summit easily and comfortably: by tram, bus or the new cable car. Discover how easily you can enjoy fresh air and nature, all without much effort.

Sljeme cable car

The first cable car that operated on Medvednica and transported visitors from Gračani to Sljeme began service in 1963.

It had a route of 4017 metres, one of the longest in Europe at the time. The lower station was at 330 metres above sea level and the upper at 1000 metres. After a malfunction, it was officially closed in 2007.

A new modern cable car opened in 2022. The departure station, Dolje, is at 267 metres above sea level, the mid-station Brestovac is at 877 metres and the upper station, Sljeme, is at 1030 metres. The route is about 5000 metres long and overcomes an elevation difference of 754 metres. The cable car has 84 gondolas, each with ten seats and ski racks. The ride takes less than 20 minutes on average. Flexible benches inside each cabin allow for the transport of people with disabilities or bicycles. The cable car is also adapted for the transport of pets, who are welcome in the gondolas.

The tram/bus stop where you get off for the cable car is called Gračansko Dolje.

Bus

Medvednica is easily accessible from all parts of Zagreb, thanks to excellent public transportation connections between tram terminals and bus lines. From the east (Dubec), west (Črnomerec), and city center (Britanski Square), regular ZET bus lines run towards Sljeme – most frequently to Gračanski dol, Mihaljevec, and Šestine, which serve as starting points for many popular hiking trails.

The lower cable car station is located next to the terminal of tram line 15, and nearby are bus stops for lines 140 (Mihaljevac – Sljeme), 227 (Svetice – Gornji Bukovac – Gračansko dolje), and 233 (Mihaljevac – Markuševec). For visitors arriving by car, there is a large underground public garage.
