Gračani – Sljeme chapel (Leustek trail)

Take tram line 15 to the second-to-last stop and get off in Gračani.

Follow Lonjšćina street to its end, where you'll reach a gravel road. Then turn immediately right across the Lonjšćina stream. There’s a sign for trail no. 14 on the bridge. From the nearby shelter, the trail gradually climbs to a junction with an unmarked path. Stay left and follow the winding marked trail uphill. The unmarked path on the right leads to Villa Rebar. The trail ascends gently along the western side of Rebar hill and across the Bešlić clearing. Soon you'll reach a flat forest road coming from Gračani – turn left and walk along it for about 20 metres. The first turn on the right leads to the top of Rebar hill, while the Leustek trail continues to the right seven metres further on. Here the hiking trail enters a coniferous forest, passes under the cable car, and emerges into a clearing. At this point, you’ve covered just over two kilometres and gained 200 metres in elevation. 30 metres ahead, you enter an airy deciduous forest. Right at the forest entrance is a hidden spring and a junction with a path to the old Adolfovac picnic site, though that trail is no longer in use. Continue along the Leustek trail through the forest to reach the Adolfovac shelter. To the right of it is a forest road that leads down to Sljemenska road. To the left, a narrow paved road enters the forest and leads to the ruins of the former Adolfovac picnic area, with remnants of an old quarry nearby.

Keep going along the trail until you reach the junction with trail no. 15, which leads to Brestovac hill. At this point, you’re nearly touching Sljemenska Cesta road. After about 30 metres, cross the road and reenter the forest. Continue to a new shelter and a junction with a forest road: to the right is the trail toward the Runolist mountain hut (trail no. 16), and to the left is Sljemenska Cesta. Cross the forest road and continue on the Leustek trail. It ascends gently, with a fence running about 50 metres on the right. From here, there’s a view of the Runolist mountain hut and the radar station. The forest then becomes young and dense, and the trail is nearly open to the sky. Soon, you’ll reach a small junction – right leads down to Runolist, left leads up to Brestovac. Keep going into a mature beech forest and you’ll arrive at the Majka Božja (Mother of God) spring, the first of three brick springs. The second spring, Truli Mosti (Rotten Bridges), is about ten minutes further along, located at a large right-hand bend. After that, you’ll emerge onto Sljemenska Cesta near Stara lugarnica (Old forester’s house). The third spring, Sokolovo vrelo (Falcon’s fountainhead), is located below the Željezničar mountain hut. Once you reach Sljemenska Cesta, turn left toward the Željezničar hut. Directly across from it are stairs – climb them and you’ll come out onto Činovnička meadow. Walk along the lower edge of the meadow until you reach the first junction with trail no. 107. Continue gently onward to Sljeme chapel, where the trail intersects with trail no. 21 – this marks the end of Leustek trail.

Leustek trail, named after its builder, forestry engineer Albin Leustek, was constructed in 1933. He designed it for citizens of Zagreb who wanted to reach Sljeme without great effort, and today it remains the easiest access to the summit of Medvednica from Zagreb.
