Podsused – Kameni Svati mountain hut
Take a train from Zagreb’s main railway station for a 12-minute ride to Podsused station, or take tram 11 or 6 from Ban Jelačić square to Črnomerec, then from the bus terminal take line 122 or 123 to Podsused square.
From Podsused square, head west toward Aleja Seljačke Bune and cross the road to the other side toward the old town of Susedgrad. Continue along a narrow paved road next to a car repair shop, and you’ll enter the park of the old town of Susedgrad. You’ll first reach the old Podsused mountain hut, which unfortunately burned down. Climb through the park, keeping to the left, and take the stairs up to the southern side of the old town. In front of you is Susedgrad, and on the wall, there is a marked place for a hiking stamp.
At the clearing before the ruins of the old town, turn left (although trail markings also lead to the right). Descend along the path to the paved road called Gornji Put, continue to the intersection with Aleja Seljačke Bune, cross it, and head uphill along Gornji Put until the pavement ends. Then follow a wide grassy path to the intersection with Meglenjak street, where you’ll turn left. Continue straight on Meglenjak, and soon, in a right bend, you’ll climb toward Put Kamenim Svatima street. At this intersection, turn right and go straight until the street curves sharply to the right – at that point, enter the forest straight ahead along a wide cart path. By now, you’ve covered about 2.5 kilometres in around 45 minutes.
For the first 700 metres through the forest, the trail is a wide cart path set in a deep cut, which makes walking a bit challenging. You’ll come across a few intersections with other forest paths, but yours is wider and well-marked, so it’s easy to follow. This trail leads you to the summit of Srednjak (400 m). Before the summit, the path crosses a few cart tracks that branch left toward the Ivanec quarry. Srednjak is more of a flat, open clearing in the forest than a true peak. Continue downhill along a wide right bend. The path narrows now and feels more like a true hiking trail than a cart path. After the trail levels out, you’ll reach a sharp left turn – but continue straight.
Soon you'll arrive at the first hiking trail intersection – this is where trail no. 2 ends, coming from Bizek, in a place called Njivice. From there, trail no. 101 gently climbs along the western side of Zakićnica Hill and soon reaches the area called Senišće, where you’ll find the Zakićnica shelter. From the shelter, walk straight for 50 metres and you’ll reach a large intersection of forest cart roads. One of them comes from above and curves sharply to the right downhill, which feels like the natural path to follow. Take this wide road into the forest, then transition to a narrow hiking trail running alongside a wider forest cart path. After descending to a plateau, the trail continues straight and reaches the intersection with trail no. 43, which comes from Ivanec Bistranski. Continue to the intersection with trail no. 7, which arrives from Jablanovec. A few minutes later, you’ll reach the Kameni Svati mountain lodge. This is the end of trail no. 101.
Note: This trail is truly easy, with minimal elevation gain, but due to its length, it may not be suitable for small children. In the middle section of the trail, near Srednjak, dog owners should keep an eye on their pets due to wild boars in the area. You might see the letters “DO” or “VO” painted on trees along the trail markings, but don’t worry – “DO” stands for Dedina obilaznica (trail loop), and “VO” for Vrapče obilaznica (trail loop).
