The Stone Wedding

Just a short drive from Zagreb, above the village of Jablanovec, lies one of Medvednica’s gems – the Stone Wedding (Kameni Svati), offering one of the best viewpoints on the mountain.

Located on the western edge of Medvednica, these striking dolomite rock formations rise 482 metres above sea level. When you reach the top, prepare to be amazed by the view. You'll be able to see the Croatian Zagorje, Samoborsko Gorje and Žumberak. On clear days, you might even spot Triglav and the Kamnik Alps in the distance.

Kameni Svati aren’t just known for their natural beauty – they’re also steeped in legend. According to local folklore, there once lived a happy family at the foot of Susedgrad: a miller, his wife and their only son. When the young man fell in love with Janja, a poor but kind-hearted girl, his mother was not pleased. Despite her disapproval, the son chose to marry Janja, with his father's blessing. On the day of the wedding, the mother stayed home, still seething, and uttered a terrible curse: “Strike me with an arrow if Janja becomes my daughter-in-law! And you, wedding guests, turn to stone on that rock!” In an instant, an arrow flew through the village and everything – the wedding party, the guests and even the village itself – turned to stone.

And so, legend has it, Kameni Svati came to be. This tale was later retold by the famous Croatian writer August Šenoa, while the earliest known version was penned by Count Ivan Sermage back in 1819 for an Austrian newspaper.

Today, Kameni Svati offer more than just a scenic hike. You can also relax with a warm drink at the mountain hut run by the Susedgrad Mountaineering Society (HPD Susedgrad). The hut is open on Sundays and the caretaker is always happy to greet you with a smile and cup of steaming tea.
