The Forester’s Grave
Tucked away in a quiet green clearing beneath a 12-metre cliff – where the Bliznec stream bubbles up with fresh drinking water – you’ll find a place known as the Forester’s Grave.
This was a favourite haunt of Zagreb’s legendary chief forester, Albin Leustek, who loved it so much he wished to be buried here. Though he was ultimately laid to rest in Šestine, the place he cared for so deeply now carries his name.
Leustek served as the city’s chief forester from 1919 to 1941, and his tireless work left a lasting legacy on Medvednica. In his memory, the path leading here is named Šumarev Put, or the Forester’s Path. Today, you’ll find benches, a memorial plaque and a well-kept trail –an inviting spot to pause and reflect. With every step, you can sense the quiet devotion of someone who truly loved this mountain.
