Stara lugarnica

If you wander a little deeper into the forest, to the spot where hikers once warmed their hands by the fire and watched the first light of dawn, you’ll find Stara Lugarnica (Old Forester’s Lodge). It’s not just a bistro, but a piece of mountain history.

It all started in the late 19th century, when members of the Croatian Mountaineering Society, founded in 1874, dreamed of their own place on Medvednica. Instead, in 1878, Gradska Kuća (City House) was built, with the ground floor becoming a forester's lodge and the upper floor reserved for mountaineers. By 1911, it had turned into a proper mountaineering hut, and over time, it grew and expanded. In 1925, everything came together into the large Tomislavov Dom, which for years served as the main hub for mountaineers – until it burned down in 1934. From the ashes, a temporary shelter was built, and believe it or not, it’s still standing here – welcoming you as Stara Lugarnica.

Today, it’s a cosy mountain bistro with a homely atmosphere, filled with the smells of bean stew, sausages and wild game goulash, while fresh apple and cheese strudels come out of the oven. The fireplace crackles, the wooden floors creak and the whole place feels like a comforting step back in time.

When you need a break, a hearty meal and a taste of simpler days, Stara Lugarnica is here, just like always – open, friendly and welcoming.
