To Sljeme, to Sljeme!

“To Sljeme!” – the iconic Zagreb phrase, a local call to escape into nature and take a breather from the daily grind. Just a stone’s throw above the bustling city streets, Medvednica mountain rises 1033 metres high, stretches 6 kilometres wide and runs about 40 kilometres in length. More than just the city’s favourite getaway, it’s a protected nature park that brims with life, history and stories. Its forests quietly breathe for the city, while its trails lead deep into a world of plants, animals and timeless tales passed down through generations.

While Sljeme is technically just the highest peak (at 1033 metres), for most locals it means the whole mountain. Medvednica – also known as Zagreb’s mountain – is steeped in history, legend and hidden cultural treasures just waiting to be discovered.

Throughout the year, Medvednica welcomes walkers, hikers, families, cyclists, skiers and anyone in need of fresh air, green landscapes and a little adventure. Along the way, you’ll find cosy mountain huts – welcoming spots where food comes served with a smile, the company is friendly and the view lifts your spirits.

Snowy and serene in winter, fragrant and fresh with new life in spring, cool and shaded in summer, soft and golden in autumn – Medvednica is always nearby, whenever you need to step away from the city and reconnect with yourself.

Play it safe on Medvednica

Our tips for exploring and enjoying the hiking trails while keeping safe
Prepare well

Before setting out, study a map of Medvednica and plan your trip based on your interests and abilities. Choose the best route to your desired destination.

Bring all the essentials

In a suitable backpack, be sure to pack your ID and money, a spare shirt, a raincoat, water and a fully charged phone. Also bring some snacks, such as fruit, an energy bar or a sandwich, even if you plan to eat at a mountain hut.

Dress appropriately

High-quality suitable gear is key for any hiking trip. Of course, it all depends on the season and on weather conditions. Proper footwear is especially important, to reduce the risk of injury and slipping.

Stick to the trails

Always walk on marked and maintained hiking trails. Trail markers are painted along the path on trees or rocks – most commonly round (a red circle with a white center) or horizontal (a red-white-red stripe).

Stay hydrated

Bring enough water and don’t rely on natural springs, as they may dry up in summer and also their water quality is not regularly tested.

Watch your dog

Hiking with a dog can be enjoyable, but it requires responsible behaviour. The owner is responsible for everything the dog does and must be able to control it in all situations. In Medvednica Nature Park, dogs are not allowed off the leash.

What to do in case of an accident?

Even though Medvednica is a tame mountain, accidents can still happen. Don’t hesitate to call for help: dial 112 and ask for HGSS (Croatian Mountain Rescue Service). Their team is trained to assist injured persons in the mountains, and you can also call them if your dog gets injured.

Let's protect Medvednica

Reduce your environmental footprint by following a few simple but effective tips

Follow the trails

Use marked trails to avoid damaging sensitive plant and animal habitats.

Minimise your ecological footprint

Use public transportation or bicycle whenever possible in order to reduce CO2 emissions. If you come by car, make sure to park in designated parking areas.

Take care of the flora and fauna

Do not touch plants, mushrooms or animals. Medvednica is home to many protected species, so be cautious. Some of the 81 types of mushrooms that grow on Medvednica are highly poisonous, even deadly!

Use eco-friendly products

If you're planning a picnic or a stay on Medvednica, use environmentally friendly products that won’t harm nature.

Do not camp

Camping outside of designated campsites is prohibited by law – let’s respect nature and the park rules.

Do not light a fire

Lighting fires in the nature park is strictly forbidden due to the high risk of wildfires, as these can endanger the environment and they’re difficult to put out in inaccessible terrain.

Don’t make noise

While visiting nature, avoid making noise such as yelling and playing loud music. Loud noises scare animals, disrupt their natural rhythms and can endanger their survival. Also, noise diminishes the experience of nature for other visitors.

Clean up after yourself

Wherever you are, always take your garbage with you and recycle whenever possible. It’s up to all of us to Medvednica clean.

Support local communities

Visit local restaurants and shops, because that way you’re supporting the local economy and making a more sustainable choice.

Volunteer and take part in conservation activities

Join in and participate in clean-up events, tree planting or trail maintenance.
