Unlock the secrets of Medvedgrad: a journey into the past

Perched high above Zagreb on the southern slopes of Mount Medvednica, Medvedgrad is a sight that stops you in your tracks – a mysterious medieval fortress rising from a dense forest.

This centuries-old stone stronghold has witnessed some of the region’s most turbulent times. Walk along its ancient walls, and you’ll almost hear the whispers of the past. This is where intrigue unfolded, fateful decisions were made and legends came to life. Built in 1242 after the Tatar invasion, Medvedgrad was designed to protect the city of Zagreb and its treasures. Over the next 800 years, it changed hands around 150 times – each new owner adding another layer to its long, fascinating history.

But no story captures the imagination quite like that of the infamous Black Queen. Legend has it that Barbara of Celje, one of the fortress’s most notorious mistresses, was breathtakingly beautiful and brilliant, but also cruel, feared for her use of dark magic and ruthless to anyone who stood in her way. It's said she threw lovers from the towers without a second thought, and her raven, trained for revenge, pecked out the eyes of her enemies. Some say she made a pact with the devil to protect Medvedgrad’s treasure but when the time came to pay her dues, she tried to outwit him – and so the devil cursed her for eternity. Her spirit is said to still roam the underground tunnels as a snake guarding the hidden treasure. Who knows, perhaps you’ll be the one to find it?

Shrouded in legend and mystery – perhaps even home to werewolves, witches, fairies and other mysterious creatures – Medvedgrad was never taken by enemy forces. But nature had other plans. A devastating earthquake in 1590 reduced it to ruins, and for centuries it remained a hauntingly beautiful echo of its former glory. Today, however, Medvedgrad shines once again, restored and ready to welcome visitors eager to step into the past and soak in the storybook views of Zagreb below.

Just a few kilometres from the hustle and bustle of downtown Zagreb, Medvedgrad is easily reached by car or scenic hiking trails through the forest. Its towers offer some of the best panoramic views of the city, and the sunsets from up there are simply unforgettable.

Inside the fortress, the visitor centre brings history to life with stories of noble families, Medvedgrad’s many legends and the wonders of surrounding nature. A hands-on multimedia exhibit will captivate all ages, and just below the southern tower, you’ll find the Altar of the Homeland – a monument to Croatia’s defenders, created by sculptor Kuzma Kovačić. But Medvedgrad isn’t just about history. Surrounded by lush forest and meandering hiking trails, it’s also the perfect place to escape the city and reconnect with nature.

Whether you're into history, legends or simply love a good hike with a view, Medvedgrad is a place that promises adventure.
