The Sljeme TV Tower
Standing tall at the summit of Medvednica, the Sljeme tower has been an iconic symbol of Zagreb for generations. It’s easy to spot from afar, but it’s only when you make the journey up that you truly appreciate just how special it is.
Here, nature and technology blend beautifully, with a view that will leave you in awe.
The tower dates back to 1859, when the first wooden structure was built on Sljeme for the Austro-Hungarian Empire’s land registry. It was just the beginning. Word quickly spread about the incredible vista from the top, and before long, people from Zagreb were making the hike more often – with no fancy gear, just plenty of enthusiasm.
That first wooden lookout didn’t last long, so more followed: in 1877, the Croatian Mountaineering Society built a second one, and in 1889, a third – this time made of iron. That tower stood strong for 71 years before it was moved to Japetić, where it still stands today.
A new chapter began in 1973 with the construction of the current concrete TV tower, which rises up to an impressive 169 metres, inspired by towers in major European cities. Designed not only for technical purposes but also as a viewing platform for visitors, it officially opened in 1976. Though it suffered heavy damage during the Croatian War of Independence, it was fully restored and reopened in 2023, now featuring a modern, beautifully designed observation deck that once again offers a stunning bird’s eye view of Zagreb.
Getting to the tower is easy, as it’s right next to the upper station of the Sljeme cable car. At the base, you’ll find benches to rest and a small grill-style restaurant, plus the option to rent a barbeque for private use.
A fast lift takes you to the top in just 20 seconds. Inside, the space is sleek and modern, complete with a café offering ice cream, sandwiches and drinks. But the real showstopper is the open-air terrace – a panoramic lookout where, on a clear day, the view stretches from the Slovenian Alps in the north all the way to Velebit in the south. If you’re lucky, you might even catch a live falconry demonstration and see majestic birds of prey like owls, falcons and eagles up close.
If you’re planning a visit, be sure to check the official website for opening hours, as the tower may occasionally close without prior notice.
Whether you’re into hiking, history, sweeping vistas or just looking for a peaceful escape from the city, the Sljeme tower is one of those places that stays with you long after you’ve left.
