Runolist mountain hut (830 m)

Tucked away in the scenic Zgorelina area of Medvednica, Runolist mountain hut is a favourite spot to rest and enjoy stunning views over Zagreb.

Built in 1935 by the Runolist Mountaineering Society, the location was chosen by head forester Albin Leustek for its natural shelter, nearby water spring and easy access to Sljeme Road and the newly built Forest Road (now Šumarev Put).

Sadly, hikers didn’t get to enjoy it for long – soon after opening, during World War II, the hut was turned into a field hospital. It remained closed for many years after the war, until it was finally returned to the Runolist Mountaineering Society. Today, it's the only mountain hut on Medvednica where you can stay overnight.

The hut has two dining rooms and six cosy sleeping rooms: one single, two doubles and three shared dorms, with a total of 44 beds. Out front, the spacious terrace showcases unbeatable views of Zagreb and the surrounding forest. The kitchen dishes out hearty homemade classics – with plenty of plant-based options for vegetarians, too.

Planning a day trip or a night in nature? Come hungry, stay cosy and soak up the mountain charm at Runolist.

You can reach the hut via Leustek trail (no. 14). At the 9th kilometre, turn right onto Forest Road (trail no. 16), and you’ll be there in no time. If you're coming from the top of Sljeme, take trail no. 1 down, passing by Grofica along the way.
